As volunteer opportunities with the Saanich Peninsula Refugee Initiative Group (SPRIG) arise, we will inform you through our UPDATES and through Social Media.
SPRIG sponsors, welcomes and helps to settle refugee families into our community. Priorities of settlement support are:
- respect for the privacy and independence of the newcomers
- the safety of the newcomers
The goal is to enable the families to be self-sufficient within one year of their arrival in Canada.
A small group of committed people provide friendship and time as the first line of support to the newcomers during their first months in Canada.
All volunteers who work one-on-one with newcomers require a criminal record check and will attend an orientation session.
Settlement work is very rewarding. However, opportunities to help are often unpredictable and time limited. Please understand that it may not be possible for SPRIG to use your offer of help.
If you are interested in volunteering with the Saanich Peninsula Refugee
Initiative Group (SPRIG), please fill out and submit the following online form. By clicking on the “Submit” button at the end of the form the information you have entered will be sent to a member of SPRIG’s Steering Committee who will follow up with you.
There are other volunteer opportunities to support refugees and immigrants in the Victoria Area. Several churches on the Peninsula are involved in sponsoring refugee families. The Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society (VIRCS)and the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) are the local non-profit organizations that need volunteers to help with their extensive programs supporting refugees and immigrants. Check their websites.
